Asian handicap (AH) is a goal-based market that levels the playing field by giving one team a virtual head start. Unlike 1X2 betting, there is no draw outcome โ the handicap eliminates it. The result is a market with better odds, lower margin, and unique strategic flexibility.
Why Asian handicap exists
In a mismatch โ say Manchester City versus a newly promoted side โ a 1X2 bet on City pays barely anything because the probability is so high. Asian handicap solves this by giving the weaker side a goal start, making the bet competitive for both sides.
Whole number handicaps (โ1, โ2, +1, +2)
Whole goal handicaps add or subtract goals from the final score before settlement.
Example: Arsenal โ1 means Arsenal must win by at least 2 goals for your bet to win. If they win by exactly 1 (e.g. 2โ1), the bet is a push (stake returned). If they win by 2+ (e.g. 3โ1), you win. If they draw or lose, you lose.
| AH Arsenal โ1 | Match result | Adjusted score | Settlement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Win | Arsenal win 3โ1 | Arsenal +3, Opp +2 | Win |
| Push | Arsenal win 2โ1 | Arsenal +2, Opp +2 | Stake returned |
| Lose | Draw 1โ1 | Arsenal +1, Opp +2 | Lose |
Half goal handicaps (โ0.5, +0.5, โ1.5, +1.5)
Half goals eliminate the push entirely โ there is always a winner.
Example: Arsenal โ1.5 means Arsenal must win by 2+ goals. A 1-goal win loses the bet. There is no "exactly 1.5 goals margin" โ it is always above or below.
This is the most common Asian handicap format and is equivalent to European handicap betting.
Quarter goal handicaps (โ0.25, +0.25, โ1.25, +1.25, โ1.75)
Quarter handicaps split your stake across two adjacent half-lines. This is where Asian handicap becomes uniquely flexible.
AH โ0.25 splits the stake between AH 0 and AH โ0.5:
- If your team wins: both halves win โ full profit.
- If the match draws: AH 0 half is pushed (returned), AH โ0.5 half loses. Net result: you lose half your stake.
- If your team loses: both halves lose โ full stake lost.
AH +0.25 splits between AH 0 and AH +0.5:
- If your team wins: full win.
- If the match draws: AH 0 pushed (returned), AH +0.5 wins. Net result: you win half your stake.
- If your team loses: full stake lost.
Quarter handicap summary table
| Handicap | Win | Draw | Lose |
|---|---|---|---|
| AH 0 (DNB) | Win all | Push (stake back) | Lose all |
| AH โ0.25 | Win all | Lose half | Lose all |
| AH โ0.5 | Win all | Lose all | Lose all |
| AH +0.25 | Win all | Win half | Lose all |
| AH +0.5 | Win all | Win all | Lose all |
A worked example: AH โ1.25
Match: Liverpool vs Wolves. You back Liverpool at AH โ1.25, meaning your stake is split:
- Half on Liverpool AH โ1 (must win by 2+, push on 1-goal win)
- Half on Liverpool AH โ1.5 (must win by 2+)
Liverpool win 3โ0 (wins by 3):
Both halves win โ full profit.
Liverpool win 2โ0 (wins by 2):
Both halves win โ full profit.
Liverpool win 1โ0 (wins by exactly 1):
AH โ1 half: push (returned). AH โ1.5 half: lose.
Net result: lose half the stake.
Draw or Liverpool lose:
Both halves lose โ full stake lost.
Why Asian handicap margins are lower
Traditional European bookmakers run 1X2 markets with 5โ8% margin. Asian handicap specialists (Betfair Exchange, Pinnacle, Asian-facing books) operate at 1โ3% margin because the two-outcome market is more liquid and easier to balance. For bettors, lower margin means better long-term returns.
When to use Asian handicap
Back a favourite to cover a spread: If you think City will win by 2+, AH โ1.5 pays more than the 1X2 win and removes the "scrape-through 1โ0" risk.
Protect an away side: AH +0.5 on an away underdog wins on a draw or away win. This is equivalent to double chance X2 but typically at better odds.
Tighter lines near the spread: Quarter handicaps let you express nuanced views โ e.g. "I think City win but I'm only 60% sure they win by 2" โ AH โ1.25 gives partial exposure.
Frequently asked questions
Does Asian handicap apply to extra time?
No. AH markets are settled on the 90-minute result unless explicitly labelled "including extra time."
What does AH 0 mean?
Asian handicap 0 is identical to Draw No Bet. If the match is drawn, your stake is returned. See our Draw No Bet guide for full details.
Can I use Asian handicap in accumulators?
Yes. If a leg ends in a push (e.g. AH 0 on a drawn match), that leg is voided and removed from the accumulator. The remaining legs carry forward.
